Jess is a web-based virtual teaching assistant designed to help teachers achieve what they aim for: deep, lasting understanding.

While most teachers want their students to go beyond memorising facts, the time pressure and heavy content demands of the GCSE course often get in the way. Jess helps bridge that gap.

It delivers expert-written, bite-sized lessons that encourage deeper thinking and cognitive engagement. This approach not only builds understanding but also strengthens memory.

Students work through clear, structured lessons and are automatically quizzed at smart intervals, before they forget. No extra work for you. Just better retention for them.

After each lesson, students receive personalised, spaced retrieval quizzes that automatically reinforce what they’ve learned.

By using Jess, teachers can ensure their students complete the course with a solid grasp of computer science, ready not just for exams, but for A-levels and beyond.

🧪 How It Works

When students log into Jess, they’re presented with their first structured lesson. The interface is simple, effective, and focused:

  • Left side: A short, clear explanation is read aloud.
  • Right side: A visual appears to help students see what they’re learning.

Students move at their own pace by tapping ‘Next’ to progress through bite-sized, multimedia slides. This mix of audio, visual, and text supports a range of learning styles and ensures clarity.

But here’s where science kicks in.

After each Jess lesson, students aren’t left to forget. Instead, they’re automatically scheduled for a retrieval quiz the next day, based on how memory works.

This is built on the Forgetting Curve, which shows students forget up to 80% of new content within 24 hours if they don’t review it.

Jess tackles that head-on with spaced retrieval, bringing back the right questions at the right time:

  • Day after learning: Students are quizzed to strengthen memory before it fades.
  • Further spacing: As they answer questions correctly, Jess spaces out the revisits, helping reinforce long-term retention.
  • Feedback built in: If students get it wrong, Jess reteaches the concept on the spot and brings it back sooner.

And here’s the key bit:

If a student answers a question correctly three times, spaced over time, Jess marks it as mastered and retires it from active rotation.

This way, students don’t just “cover” topics, they prove they’ve retained them.

You don’t have to track progress manually or guess who’s falling behind.

Jess does it all, automatically and intelligently.

💡 What Makes Jess Different

Jess isn’t just about remembering facts. It’s about building true understanding and making it stick.

Every single lesson is written to promote deeper thinking and cognitive engagement.
Students are guided to:

  • Reflect
  • Connect ideas
  • Understand, not just absorb

This kind of mental processing creates stronger memory traces and better prepares students to apply what they’ve learned, whether it’s tackling tricky exam questions or solving real-world problems.

But Jess doesn’t stop when the lesson ends.

It introduces smart, personalised spaced retrieval, so every student reviews what they need, when they need it.

Jess tracks their responses, adapts the timing of each quiz, and retires questions once they’ve been truly mastered. This ensures that students keep revisiting key knowledge just before they forget it, reinforcing learning with zero guesswork or manual setup. Where most tools stop at “expose and test,” Jess goes further: Think. Understand. Retain.

👩‍🏫 Who Jess is For

For Teachers:

Jess is your virtual teaching assistant. It works alongside you to:

  • Deliver high-quality, curriculum-aligned content.
  • Reinforce learning with zero manual scheduling.
  • Boost student recall and reduce your re-teaching time.

Use it before a lesson as pre-learning, after a topic to lock in knowledge, or during revision to keep everything fresh. Jess adapts to your classroom flow, not the other way around.

For Parents:

Jess gives families a powerful, affordable alternative to tutoring.

If a child needs extra support outside school, Jess provides structured learning, built-in revision, and science-backed reinforcement, without the stress of scheduling sessions or breaking the bank. And because it works online, students can study anytime, anywhere.

🎯 Why We Built Jess

Let’s face it: too many Computer Science students are memorising definitions without ever understanding how things actually work.

We built Jess to change that.

Instead of short-term performance, Jess focuses on deep comprehension and long-term memory, so students can move into exams feeling confident, not crammed.

We’ve embedded proven learning science into every interaction, from how lessons are written to when quizzes appear.

Because when learning is done right, exam success is just the byproduct.

With Jess, students can finally say:

“Computer Science? That’s sorted.”

📚 Use Cases

Here’s how teachers are using Jess in their classrooms:

  • Before teaching a topic: Let students build foundational understanding ahead of time.
  • During term time: Set independent study that reinforces lessons without repeating yourself.
  • Catch-up support: Ideal for students who missed key content.

Exam prep: Use spaced quizzes to power revision with no extra setup.

💷 Cost

Jess is free during our pilot phase for early adopters in the UK.

We’re offering full access to teachers to gather feedback and continue improving the platform.

Once out of pilot, Jess will remain affordable and school-friendly, because we believe great learning tools should be accessible to every student, not just those who can pay extra.
